Glass Futures welcomes LCR Net Zero board

Glass Futures welcomed the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Net Zero Cabinet Board as St Helens Borough Council's Leader Councillor Anthony Burns led the first meeting of the group after taking up the role as the lead for the region in the area.

The board is focusing on supporting the region meet its commitment to reach net zero by 2035 and working with industry to cut production of carbon for a greener future for generations to come.

Delegates from across the region then got the chance to take a tour around Glass Futures and learn more about how the research and innovation centre in the heart of St Helens Borough is at the forefront of support the glass industry meet the demands of a net zero future.

Councillor Anthony Burns said: "As lead for the Net Zero Cabinet while hosting the first board meeting there was no better place to invite members than to see the fantastic work Glass Futures is doing. We are incredibly proud of Glass Futures, who are on a mission to revolutionise and decarbonise global glass production at what is a world first, industry-led international centre of excellence here in St Helens, the cradle of glass innovation. Glass Futures is investigating new green hydrogen technologies and process innovation, in tandem with working with St Helens Borough Council on hydrogen vehicles - so incredibly exciting and innovative activities at the forefront of net zero.

"We cannot underestimate the importance of the net zero agenda, not only in delivering our climate and natural environment ambitions but also ensuring that we deliver our wider growth and inclusivity ambitions in clean, green and energy efficient way. The net zero agenda touches all aspects of our work and life, where and how we live, the choices we make on a day to day basis, how we travel and connect across the city region and at times the scale of the challenge we face in meeting our net zero ambitions can seem overwhelming, however we all have a responsibility and role to take and drive action in this space and every action that we take no matter how small can make a difference."

Richard Katz, Chief Executive at Glass Futures added, "It was a pleasure to host the first Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Net Zero Cabinet Board at Glass Futures and show them around our £54 million 165,000 sq. ft facility as one of many great examples of the work already being carried out for the net zero agenda across the region.

"We are nearing completion of the world's first open-access experimental pilot line to support research and development for the glass and foundation industries, which are essential to everyday society, and we're proud to support initiatives such as the Net Zero Cabinet and St Helens, the home of glass."
