Parks and open spaces

Introduction

We are responsible for the provision, management and maintenance of over 720 hectares of public parks and green spaces.

With a lot to offer, from leisurely walks with our families, friends and dogs, in many of our formal and country parks, running and cycling paths for those who have more energy to burn off! Childrens play areas to let the kids run off some steam, outdoor gyms and sports areas to keep you fit, something for everyone to enjoy at any time of the day all year round.

Why not visit the Dream Sculpture that is in Sutton Manor community woodland, it boasts beautiful walks there too ...

Parks maintenance

We are responsible for the general management of operations and day-to-day maintenance of various parks, playing fields and gardens across St Helens, and also provide play equipment inspections and maintenance.

Mobile gardening teams regularly visit sites to ensure that the defined standards are maintained.

We do not cut grass that is privately owned, or on properties/estates owned by bodies other than the council.

The gardening staff ensure that the quality and range of horticultural features are all maintained appropriately and standards of cleanliness and health & safety are achieved, for example:

  • grass areas
  • litter collection
  • flower and shrub beds
  • hedges
  • playgrounds
  • outdoor sports facilities
  • trees

All council-owned land is maintained on:

  • highway verges
  • public open spaces
  • school grounds
  • parks
  • town centres
  • cemeteries and crematoriums

To report any issue with maintenance in any of the areas above, please contact us.

Green Flag Award
What is a Green Flag Award®?

The Green Flag is an international award that recognises well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces, having good environmental standards, being well maintained and providing clean and safe visitor facilities. Directions to each site is in the Google map at the bottom of the page.

Purpose & aims

  • To ensure that everybody has access to quality green and other open spaces, irrespective of where they live.
  • To ensure that these spaces are appropriately managed and meet the needs of the communities that they serve.
  • To establish standards of good management.
  • To promote and share good practice amongst the green space sector.
  • To recognise and reward the hard work of managers, staff and volunteers.

The Green Flag Award is managed under license from the UK Government Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities by Keep Britain Tidy who also administers the scheme in England.  Keep Britain Tidy sub licence the scheme to be delivered in other countries.

St Helens Borough Council is proud to reward the work and efforts we all put in, from the parks team, grounds maintenance, the volunteers, the ward councillors and the council as a whole. As a council we don't celebrate our achievements enough so this year's announcements of gaining four Green Flag Awards are something to shout about! Victoria Park has had the Green Flag award since 2014.

St Helens have achieved 4 Green Flag awards in total, they are Victoria Park, Taylor Park, Mesnes Park and the Green Flag Community award for the Friends of St Helens Cemetery.
