Premises licence changes - minor variation
This process can only be used where the variations will not adversely impact on the promotion of the four licensing objectives which are: the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, the prevention of public nuisance, and the protection of children from harm.
- Minor changes to the structure or layout of a premises.
- Small adjustments to the licensing hours (but not to extend the hours for the sale or supply of alcohol at any time between 11pm and 7am, increase the amount of time on any day during which alcohol may be sold by retail or supplied, and/or add the sale or supply of alcohol to the licence).
- Removal of irrelevant or unenforceable conditions.
- Adding certain licensable activities, for example live music.
How to apply
To apply for a minor variation you will need to complete:
Note: In order to begin the application process you will need your 'online reference number' which can be located on your premises licence, on our public register, or by obtained contacting us.
Before you submit your application, you must also provide the following supporting documentation:
- A plan of the premises (if your application is to change the premises layout). Your plan must detail each point under regulation 23 of the The Licensing Act 2003 (Premises licences and club premises certificates) Regulations 2005.
- A copy of the premises licence.
Once you have uploaded the required supporting documentation you will be prompted to pay the application fee:

Advertising your application
For a period of 10 working days, starting the day after we have accepted your application, you must display a notice in a prominent position on the premises where it can be conveniently read from the outside by passers-by, which is:
- On white A4 paper, and,
- Printed legibly or typed in black ink in a font equal to or larger than 16

Note: Any incorrect information or dates on your public notice will result in a delay to your application.
How long will it take to process
There are set timescales stated in the legislation for determining a minor variation application. If the responsible authorities do not object to your application, it is automatically granted after 10 working days. If your application receives objections it will be rejected and your application fee will be refunded.

If you are not experienced in the submission of licence applications, you may wish to consider contacting a licensing solicitor or licensing agent to carry out this work on your behalf. If applications are submitted incorrectly or are not of the required standard, they may be rejected and you will lose your fee.
