Stanley Bank
Stanley Bank Local Nature Reserve sits between the residential areas of Laffak and Blackbrook to the west and south, and the A580 East Lancs Road to the north. It is owned and managed by St Helens Council.
Stanley Bank is the gateway to the Sankey Valley and itself a rich with Historical and natural importance. It is the site of an 18th century Iron Slitting Mill, the terminus of England's First Canal and contains a Site of Special Scientific Interest, two Ancient Semi- Natural Woodlands and the Black Brook River. Today it has been developed as an area or recreation, education and special natural interest.
The surrounding parkland consists largely of woodland and open amenity grassland areas. Much of this woodland is designated as a Local Nature Reserve and the adjoining meadow as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Stanley Bank Meadow is a valuable unimproved damp natural grassland habitat. It is home to many species of native wildflower, mammals, birds and insects.
The Visitor Centre forms the main entrance to the site and is situated off the A58 Blackbrook Road approximately 30 vehicles.
